Project D.A.T.E. is ...
National statistics show that dating violence, date rape, and sexual harassment among young people have reached frightening proportions. It has also been shown that effective education is the key to preventing sexual abuse among teenagers. In Summer 2000, Cedar Valley Friends of the Family responded to these statistics by developing, piloting, and presenting Project D.A.T.E. in area schools.
Project D.A.T.E. has been developed for Bremer,Butler and Chickasaw County students in grades 5-12 in co-educational and/or same sex classes. A teaching team consisting of a sexual assault advocate and an Iowa Certified Educator presents the program.
When presented, Project D.A.T.E. is broken down into four sections:
- domestic violence,
- healthy vs. unhealthy relationships,
- sexual assault/date rape,
- and sexual harassment.
Classroom materials are delivered to the school prior to the class for administrative review and/or community reaction. The presentation is flexible and can be tailored to meet the needs and interests of each school and teacher.
