Rape Statistics

Rape is not about sex. It is about power and control.

  • 1 in 3 women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime.
  • Of these women, 1 in 4 will be sexually assaulted before she is 18 years old.
  • 1 in 7 men will be sexually assaulted in his lifetime.
  • Of these men, 1 in 5 will be sexually assaulted before he is 18 years old.
  • 98% of perpetrators are heterosexual males.
  • 90% of sexual assaults are male on female abuse.
  • 90% of sexual assaults have a threat of force or involve the actual use of physical force.
  • 80% of sexual assault survivors have no outward injuries.
  • 80-85% of sexual assaults happen between people who know each other.
  • 53% of sexual assaults happen in the victim's or the offender's home.
  • In 1999, 385 rapes and 8 attempted rapes were reported to the Sexual Abuse Hotline in the state of IOWA.
  • Only 2% of Rape Reports are found to be false!
