Basic questions to ask all children

  • What is an emergency?
  • What is the first number you would call in an emergency?
  • Which friends or relatives can you call in case of an emergency? What are their names and numbers? (also consider teachers, counselors, day care providers, neighbors)
  • If you were to see or hear one of your family members being hurt, what would you do? Who would you tell? (Options: call police, go to neighbors, hide under bed, call CVFF)
  • If you were being hurt, what would you do, and who would you tell?
  • How can you tell when someone is getting angry enough to fight, or hurt someone?
  • Where are some places inside your home where you can hide?
  • Where are some places outside your home where you can hide?
  • Where is the nearest pay phone to your home? Do you need a quarter to call 911? Can you use a neighbor's phone?
  • Do you understand what child abuse is?
    • What is physical abuse?
    • What is emotional abuse?
    • What is sexual abuse?
  • Do you know that you have the right to be safe and free from abuse?
  • What are some other ways you can protect yourself from abuse?
